Poker is a game where the twin elements of luck and skill are both required to win. Over time, the application of skill will virtually eliminate the randomness of luck.

The game is played with cards and chips (money). Each player has 2 personal cards which they are dealt, and there are 5 community cards. Each player attempts to make the best five card hand using a combination of these two cards and the community cards. There are multiple rounds of betting, and the players with the highest poker hand win the pot. Players may also discard some of their cards and draw new ones in order to improve their poker hands.

A typical poker game starts with 2 mandatory bets (called antes or blinds) put into the pot by the players to the left of the dealer. A round of betting then takes place, and the dealer deals a 4th card to the table (known as the “flop”). Then another round of betting takes place, and a 5th card is dealt face up at the end of the game (the “river”).
