Lotteries were very popular in the Low Countries during the 15th century, and their history is closely related to that of modern lotteries. In the 15th century, France had several public lotteries for public purposes, including raising funds for the poor and for fortifications. Francis I of France even permitted lotteries in several cities from 1520 to 1539. In Italy, the first public lotteries, called ventura, were held in the city-state of Modena, Italy. Then in the early 17th century, a lottery in Genoa, Italy, was held.<\/p>\n
