However, there are a few drawbacks to Lottery that should be taken into consideration before playing.<\/p>\n<p>Lotteries have a long history in human society, including use by the Roman emperors to distribute property and slaves and by the Dutch to raise funds for town fortifications. They were popular in colonial America and helped fund the creation of universities like Harvard and Yale, and even a road across the Blue Ridge Mountains. Benjamin Franklin sponsored a lottery to help pay for cannons to defend Philadelphia during the Revolution, and Thomas Jefferson sponsored one in Virginia to relieve his crushing debts.<\/p>\n<p>Today, state-run lotteries have come to dominate the gambling industry worldwide. Their popularity is driven by the perception that winning a lottery prize will improve your life in some meaningful way. However, there are several significant problems with state-run lotteries. Second, they promote gambling in a misleading manner by suggesting that you can win your dream job, house or car by buying a ticket. Third, they encourage compulsive gambling habits by promoting unrealistic expectations and magical thinking.
